Clascoterone Cream vs Solution: What's the Difference?

Clascoterone exists in two well-known formats: a 1% cream approved for acne vulgaris, and higher-concentration solutions used in scalp research. Confusing them leads to poor outcomes, because the vehicle is engineered for the target tissue.

The cream: designed for facial skin

A cream is an emulsion of oil and water with emollients and preservatives. It sits on the skin surface, hydrates the stratum corneum and releases active slowly across a broad, hair-free area — ideal for the face and trunk.

On a hair-bearing scalp the same properties become liabilities: the cream is caught by hair, distributes unevenly, leaves visible residue and makes accurate dosing almost impossible.

The solution: designed for the scalp

A solution is a clear liquid — typically an alcohol and glycol system — that spreads along the scalp, evaporates quickly and leaves no film. It reaches the follicular opening, which is the entry route that matters for the dermal papilla.

It also permits accurate dosing: a calibrated dropper delivers a reproducible 1 mL every time, which is why every serious scalp study uses a solution format.

The practical takeaway

Do not repurpose an acne cream onto the scalp and do not apply a high-concentration scalp solution to facial skin. The molecule may be the same, but concentration, vehicle and intended surface area are not interchangeable.
